connections, sbb cff ffs & thinking about systems . . .

charles & ray eames use to talk about connections all the time in their references to design . . . in fact, before there was the retrospective book of their life’s work, eames design | © 1989 john neuhart, marilyn neuhart & ray eames, harry abrams inc. |, there was a small brochure from the university of california at los angeles from 1976 called, connections: the work of charles & ray eames . . .

understanding how things are connected to one another is the beginning of thinking about systems instead of singular, isolated objects . . . at swiss federal railways, i was confronted with how any one assignment / problem i was working on at that particular moment, would effect the rest of the designs in the entire company, what would the ripple effect be upon the over all . . . this is when i started to think more deeply about systems & begin to truly appreciate the phrase, “the whole is more than the sum of it’s parts” . . . with trains, mobility & public transportation in general, everything is connected to everything else . . .
