according to brand eines magazine, poland had 227 memorials for johannes paul ll in 2005 and as of 2011, they now have 440. i have noticed that bavaria, also seems to have a very interesting relationship to its memorials. this is only based on my own personal observations as a designer after being in the oberpfalz for more than six months. in order to have a more serious and thorough approach to this idea, one would of course have to go to the, bayerischen landesamtes für denkmalpflege, but that’s not necessary for my purposes here. in berlin at the “haus der kulturen der welt” there was a symposium last year called, “memorial mania: negotiating social & political strategies of memory.” i would just ask you to consider the following without turning it into a topic for a dissertation; what are structures like walhalla and the hall of liberation (in kelheim) really about ? i’m also curious about the aesthetic possibilities with a new memorial in a contemporary context. one such example just might be the proposed glyptothek etsdorf oberpfalz. even if the formal manifestation of this twenty-first memorial is based merely on classic models, could the structural performance of the edifice be more in keeping with new developments in concrete technology ? enough speculation for the moment within the season without reason . . .
