today is the fourth sunday of advent and let us not forget that popular culture has made much of the inclusion of nikolaos the wonderworker (greek: Νικόλαος ο Θαυματουργός, nikolaos o thaumaturgos) and his feastday of december 6th. saint nicholas (model for santa claus, whose modern name comes from the dutch word, sinterklaas) is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, children, and students (design & otherwise) in greece, belgium, france, romania, bulgaria, georgia, albania, russia, the republic of macedonia, slovakia, serbia, and montenegro. kathleen creighton’s great x-mess photograph seems to captures some of the essences of this very strange holiday, with or without nikolaos the wonderworker, that use to be the pagan’s festival of lights . . .
