the invention of the oloid & paul schatz . . .
the world can be turned inside out, the world has rhythm. this perspective from the
sculptor, technician & inventor paul schatz |*1898 †1979| offers a new perception
of geometry, three-dimensional space, & mechanical engineering. schatz made the
discovery that the five regular, platonic bodies are invertible & moveable. schatz’s
journey of his discovery leads to stunning developments in design, in which he
invented & developed a whole series of new forms, that all had some connection
to the motion principles of inversion. marine propulsion systems, mixing machines,
new appliances for treating water, airships, invertible lamps and packaging are all
represented in his wide-ranging work. schatz was committed to the platonic ideal
of holism. he also wanted to make complex mathematical problems more accessible
to the general public by means of the beauty of geometric forms and in doing so
to appeal to our playful joy of discovery.
