among other japanese artists, susumu shingu is known as a sculptor of the wind. shingu’s works illuminate metaphorically nature through their dialogue with the elements of wind and water. the filmmaker | photographer, thomas riedelsheimer made a documentary about the artist’s vision entitled, b r e a t h i n g e a r t h, susumu shingu’s dream. the opening of the susumu shingu wind museum took place in june 2014. located close to osaka, kobe and kyoto, the museum presents kinetic sculptures by the artist, which evolve in their natural environment and move by the energies of wind &/or water . . .

and last but not least, an interesting reference from the nineteen eighties. the late dr. paul eubel, working at the goethe institute in osaka, discovered the world of japanese kites. this gave him the idea to organize a collection of artistic kites and, so to speak, to use the sky as a gallery. the event took place in 1989. it showed more than 100 kites, constructed by japanese kite-makers and painted by world-wide contemporary and well-known artists | among them frank stella, arman, daniel buren, jean tinguely, niki de saint-phalle, vasarely, antoni tàpies, etc. | after the first flight vernissage in japan in 1989, the art kite collection continued to be successfully displayed around the world. the catalogue for the exhibits in germany entilted,
bilder für den himmel: kunstdrachen, is still widely available today . . .
