labor day is a celebration of the determination and the achievements of hard working men and women across this nation and in the empire state. it was in new york that this great holiday was first celebrated, and where we are continuously fighting for the respect, pride and dignity of all our workers.
now more than ever, as rights of labor unions are threatened in washington, new york is fighting even harder to preserve union jobs, lift up the middle class and protect our workers. we passed a $15 minimum wage to restore economic fairness and we secured paid family leave because no one should choose between caring for their loved ones and earning a paycheck. this year, i signed legislation allowing full union dues to be deducted from new york state taxes, reflecting our unyielding commitment to defend union jobs as a pathway to the middle class.
in new york, we take pride in our workers and we know that our communities have been built on the foundation they laid and that the future prosperity of this state rests with the spirit of innovation that embodies our work force. it was here where the labor movement began, where a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work became a core value and—because of that—where people from all over the world wanted to come and make a better life for themselves and their families as new yorkers. on behalf of all new yorkers, i wish our friends in organized labor and all workers a safe and happy labor day . . .
